Unit Title: Basic principles of chemistry

Prerequisite: A pass in Year 11 examination or equivalent

This unit builds on the knowledge learnt in Year 11 high school education. It is designed to provide students avenues to apply the concepts they learned. Topics covered included, the uniqueness of carbon, hydrocarbon compounds nomenclatures and reactions, aldehydes, ketones and nomenclature with tests, alcohol, and reactions, carboxylic acids and esters, kinetics, rate of reaction and its effects, the law of thermodynamics, enthalpy, dynamic equilibrium, Bronsted-lowry and Lewis acids and bases, dissociation constant, pH calculations and oxidation and reduction.
